**NO LYA TRACK & FIELD TONIGHT MONDAY 7/25/22 DUE TO PENDING THUNDERSTORMS, RAIN AND WET FIELD CONDITIONS. **
Yes we are back!! LYA Track and Field will be held again this summer at Downingtown East High School Track (behind the high school)! We are so looking forward to this activity as it has always been a big hit with the young athletes who want to run, jump and throw on two hot summer afternoons an week. For our youngest athletes this is an introductory program on basic track skills. Hopefully getting them interested in pursuing these activities at the Middle and High School levels. For the teenagers it is a chance to compete with kids in their community and age groups and have some fun.
We will start the program on Monday June 13th and it will be every Monday and Wednesday from that date until July 27th. 7 weeks of fun! We will not be having a session on Monday 4th of July. Our starting time for gathering in the bleachers is 5:15. Everyone need to be ready to run by 5:30 when we start warm ups. The session will last until 6:45 and we must be off the field in a timely manner as anther group follows us. The cost per child is $35.00. They will be receiving a LYA – T Shirt in the color of their age group.
Blue will be 8 -10 year old’s (8 year olds must have a dedicated full-time volunteer each practice)
Red will be 11 -13 year old’s
Orange will be 14 – 16 year old’s.
We are encouraging 17 – 18 year olds who love to be around the track to volunteer to help the younger groups - Special Volunteer Shirt! Teenage volunteers are the heart and soul of this program. It takes many to supervise the 180 -200 kids who participate. This year we have two Teen LYA Track Commissioners to help organize the field events who are Grace Roth a graduating senior at East and centerfielder on the East Softball team and Owen Hibshman, a graduating senior at East and Cross-country and Long distance Track event runner.
We are opening up this year to 8 year olds with the qualification that at least one of the parents or guardian must be full time field volunteer helping keep the kids moving from event to event. They will be with the Blue teams.
My primary helper and Co - Commissioner is Alli Roth East graduate. She will be there organizing the crews every week with Tom Pearson a West Graduate.
It takes about 10 teen volunteers and 6 adult volunteers every week to make this program work smoothly. We whole heartily welcome all volunteers. Adult volunteers must have their State Child Abuse Clearance Certificates to participate in LYA programs. This is the link to go to start the process. Please do that right away if you wish to help. It is quick and easy to do.
Finally this is my last year as LYA track commissioner. It has been a fun 5 years for me, a bit frustrating with COVID but we are going to go out with a good season! I would like to encourage anyone who would like to succeed me to contact me early and I will “show you the ropes”. We will need someone next year for this very popular program. The kids love it. It will make you understand what giving back to your community really feels like. A big help is having your kids in high school cross country and track or any other sport program to sign up the teen volunteers. I can not stress how much these kids do for the program and are needed to make it work!
We look forward to an great season. Sign up forms are on this link. We will take sign ups thru June 6th .
General Track Information:
In the summer of 2012, the Lionville Youth Association proudly introduced its newest sport program, Track & Field. The program is a fun, inexpensive introduction to Track & Field, as well as great pre-season training for Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer and other fall sports, for more experienced athletes.
